Questions people ask
Straight answers about how this tool works.
What is the 5 hashtag rule on Instagram?
The 5 hashtag rule is Instagram’s limit of five hashtags on a post or Reel — before that the limit was 30. Instagram says a few targeted hashtags work better than a long list of generic ones. So the job now is to pick the five that describe your post best. The generator gives you ten; you keep the best five.
What are the best hashtags for Instagram?
The best hashtags are the ones that describe your specific post. Broad tags like #love or #photography have hundreds of millions of posts, so yours disappears in seconds. Smaller topic tags with a few hundred thousand posts keep you visible for longer. With only five slots, every tag has to earn its place.
Is this Instagram hashtag generator free?
Yes. It is free and there is no login. You do not need an account with us, and you do not hand over an email address to see your results. Reword your description and run it again as often as you like, then copy the hashtags straight into Instagram.
How do I create my own hashtag on Instagram?
You create a hashtag by typing it in a caption — there is no registration step. Pick something short that nobody else is using. Search it on Instagram first to check it is free. Then put it in your bio and on your posts so people learn it. Letters and numbers work, but spaces and symbols do not.
Do hashtags still work on Instagram?
Yes, but they do less than they used to. They help Instagram sort your post by topic, and they help people find it in search. What has taken their place is the post itself — Instagram leans on what is in your photo, video and caption to decide who sees it. Write a clear caption first, then add your hashtags.
Does this hashtag generator work for Instagram Reels?
Yes. Reels use the same hashtag system as feed posts, and the same limit of five applies. Describe what happens in the video, not only the cover image, and the suggestions will fit better. Add the hashtags to the Reel caption before you post.
Can I use the same hashtags on every Instagram post?
You can, but it is a weak habit. Each post is about something a little different, so the same five tags will fit some posts badly. Tags that do not match the post bring the wrong viewers. Keep one or two tags that describe your niche, then change the rest for each post.
Will hashtags work on a private account?
No. Posts from a private account do not appear on hashtag pages at all — only your approved followers see them. Switch your profile to public if you want hashtags to bring in new viewers.
Where do I put the hashtags — caption or comment?
Both work, and there is no reach penalty for either. With only five tags, the caption is the simple choice: put them at the end, after your own words. If you prefer the first comment, post that comment straight away — an hour later, the post has already had its first push.
What hashtags should I avoid?
Skip follow-for-follow tags like #follow4follow and #likeforlike — they are full of accounts hunting for follows, not for your content. Also skip tags that have nothing to do with the photo, and check that a tag is not banned: search it in Instagram, and if the page hides recent posts, drop it.
How to pick Instagram hashtags that actually help
Which ones to use now that the limit is five, which ones to skip, and where to put them in the post.
Instagram allows up to five hashtags on a post or Reel. The limit used to be 30, and many older guides still say so — ignore them. Instagram’s reason was plain: a few targeted hashtags do more for a post than a long list of generic ones.
Putting some tags in the caption and more in a comment does not get you extra slots. Go over five and Instagram blocks the post or drops the extra tags. You do not have to use all five either — three tags that fit beat five that half fit.
Hashtag sizes: why smaller often wins
A hashtag with 200 million posts sounds great until you see how fast the page moves. Your post sits at the top for a second and then it is gone.
| Tag size | Rough post count | What it does for you |
|---|---|---|
| Huge | Over 10 million | Buried almost instantly |
| Big | 1 to 10 million | A little reach, heavy competition |
| Medium | 100k to 1 million | The useful middle for most accounts |
| Small | Under 100k | You stay visible for hours |
| Niche or branded | Under 10k | Few viewers, but the right ones |
Spread your five across the rows. One big, two medium and two small is a sensible shape. Instagram shows the post count under each tag when you search it, so this takes a minute to check.
Weak hashtags versus better hashtags
Here is how that plays out on three made-up posts. The weak tags could sit on any post. The better tags say what this one is about.
| The post | Weak hashtags | Better hashtags |
|---|---|---|
| Latte art in a cafe | #reels #viral #explore | #latteart #baristalife #coffeeshop |
| Leg workout at home | #fitness #gym #motivation | #legday #homeworkout #gluteworkout |
| Wedding in Tuscany | #love #wedding #instagood | #tuscanywedding #destinationwedding #weddingphotographer |
A set that works
- Every tag describes what is in the post
- A mix of sizes, from broad to niche
- Words a real person would type into search
- A different set for each post
A set that wastes space
- #follow4follow, #likeforlike, #instagood
- Five tags that all sit in the millions
- Tags with nothing to do with the photo
- The same block pasted onto everything
Picking your five: a 4-step routine
Do this once per post. It takes two minutes.
Describe the post plainly
Write what is actually in it. “Homemade sourdough loaf” beats “food content” every time.
Generate a list
Use the hashtag generator above. You get up to 10 ideas built from your description, not a generic top ten.
Cut it down to five
Delete anything that does not match the photo or video. Keep the five that describe it best. Fewer is fine.
Check the sizes
Search two or three of the tags in Instagram and look at the post count. Swap out anything far too big.
Type the hashtag into Instagram search. If the page shows a notice about hidden posts, or the top posts look nothing like yours, drop that tag and pick another. Repeating blocked tags is also one cause of a shadowban.
Hashtag checklist before you post
Run through this list once. It catches the common mistakes.
- Five hashtags or fewer — never more.
- Every tag matches what is in the post.
- No follow-for-follow or like-for-like tags.
- A mix of sizes, not all giants.
- Different from the set you used last time.
- Your account is public, or the tags do nothing.
Hashtags are one small lever among several. Good hashtags on a dull post will not save it. Good hashtags on a post people want to watch help the right people find it a bit sooner — and that is all they were ever meant to do.
